Yup, we’re back, and one day ahead of schedule for one very important reason. We wanted to celebrate our 20th post on what happens to be the 195th anniversary of Nicaraguan Independence from Spain! Can you fathom it? Twenty photo shoots down, cranking ’em out like pros. During these Fiestas Patrias we’re bringing you a very special feature, but before we get to that, let’s talk a bit about the motherland.
Estamos de regreso en nuestro vigésimo articulo, y celebrando el aniversario de la Independencia de Nicaragua! Lo pueden creer? Ya tenemos 20 semanas de MyXXFLY. Estamos hechos todos unos profesionales no jodan. Durante estas Fiestas Patrias les estamos trayendo una modelo muy especial, pero antes de eso, hablemos un poco sobre la madre patria.
Nicaragua’s history since its independence has been anything but a cake-walk. After becoming a sovereign nation, Nicaragua has been plagued with political unrest, civil wars, dictatorships, and revolutions well into the 20th century. The proud and hard-working people of the country persevere, but to this day, freedom within its own borders continues to be a struggle. The country currently faces uncertainty at the hands of Daniel Ortega and the Sandinista Party, who seek to rewrite the constitution and alter the government hierarchy through illegal means.
Las historia de Nicaragua desde su independencia no a sido todo alegría y felicidad. Después de ser una nación soberana, Nicaragua a tenido inquietud política, guerras civiles, dinastías, y revoluciones. La gente orgullosa y trabajadora del país siguen adelante, pero hasta hoy en día, la libertad dentro de sus propios bordes continua siendo una lucha. El paiz todavía se afronta a incertidumbre en las manos de Daniel Ortega y los Sandinistas que desean cambiar la constitución, alterando el gobierno de manera ilegal.
As Nicaragua celebrates its Independence it’s important to remember that freedom is not a given. We cannot forget the work it took to stabilize the country, and we must learn from the struggle of the many Latin American countries that continue to fight for basic freedoms to this day. Research has shown the effect of mass communications to skew public perception. I find that the role of the press in activism and social revolutions is vital. Reporters and journalists that represent the masses, speaking about issues that concern the people, as well as the ubiquity of the platform social media lends to these causes, can help to stop tyranny in its tracks. This is why we are so excited this week, to be featuring the lovely and talented reporter, journalist, and orgullo Nica Ms. Jessica Roiz.
Mientras Nicaragua celebra su independencia debemos recordar que la libertad no es regalada. No podemos olvidar el trabajo que tomo en hacer el paiz estable, y debemos de aprender de los esfuerzos de otros paizes en Latino-América que siguen luchando por libertades básicas hasta el sol de hoy. Estudios enseñan el efecto de comunicación masiva en cambiar la percepción del publico. Por eso yo encuentro que el trabajo de la prensa en el activismo y en revoluciones sociales es sumamente importante. Reporteros y periodistas que representan al pueblo, hablando de cosas que le importan a el ciudadano, ayuda a detener la tiranía. Por eso estamos muy alegres esta semana en tener de visita a la bella y talentosa reportera y orgullo única, la Señorita Jessica Roiz.
We set out at dawn on a Friday morning on the outskirts of Sweetwater; Nica pride in tow. No other location was more fitting for this shoot than the spot behind the middle school where Jessica and I met, Ruben Dario Park. The scholar and activist, Ruben Dario, was an influential Nicaraguan writer and poet, notable nationally and abroad as a pivotal figure in 20th century Spanish-American literature. Like many Nicas in Miami, Jessica grew up in and around this park which was a central hub of activity for the Nicaraguan community. A few blocks away, we used the beautiful murals of the bustling Centrocomercial Managua as a backdrop. Here, Central Americans can find businesses that import, sell, and make, authentic foods and pastries from the motherland to fill every antojo, or craving, for when the home-sickness strikes.
Salimos de madrugada un viernes por la mañana en la ciudad de Sweetwater, con todo orgullo en el corazón. Ningún otro sitio era mas adecuado para este sesion fotografica que el lugar al lado de la escuela donde Jessica y yo nos conocimos, el parque de Ruben Dario. El erudita y activista, Ruben Dario, era una figura Nicaragüense influencial en escritura y poesía, reconocido nacionalmente e internacionalmente como una figura central de la literatura Hispano-Americana del siglo veinte. Como muchos Nicas en Miami, Jessica creció cerca de este parque y vecindario. Unas cuadras de aquí, usamos los bellos murales del Centrocomercial Managua como fondo. Aquí, Centro-Americanos pueden encontrar negocios que traen, hacen, y venden, comidas y pasteles auténticos de sus países de origen. Cuando tengan algún antojo Nica, lo pueden encontrar aquí.
The Roiz family emigrated to New York in the eighties before settling in the flourishing Nicaraguan enclaves of sunny Miami, FL where Jessica Lucia was born. During middle school, a time where kids are trying to find themselves, and especially distance themselves from their parents to develop their own identities, Jessica’s pride in her native country shone brightly. There are two things that set her apart in a sea of “Jessica’s”; her love of Nicaragua, and devotion to the Backstreet Boys. Her nicknames were one of two, “La Nica” or “BSB Freak”. If she’d had her way, Jessica would’ve grown up to be a choreographer for the boy-band, instead, she became a reporter.
La familia Roiz inmigro a Nueva York en los años ochenta antes de hacer su hogar en los nidos Nicaragüenses que estaban creciendo bajo el sol de Miami Florida donde nació Jessica Lucia. Durante sus años de primaria cuando niños están tratando de encontrar sus identidades y distanciarse de sus padres, el orgullo que Jessica tenia por Nicaragua radiaba. Habían dos cosas que la distinguían en un mar de”Jessicas”, su amor por León, Nicaragua y su fanaticismo por los Backstreet Boys. Sus apodos eran “La Nica” o “BSB Freak”. Ella soñaba en hacer coreografía para la banda, pero en ves, se hizo reportera.
In her formative years Jessica coupled her creativity with a love of story-telling. She decided to pursue journalism when her high school yearbook and Honors English teacher recognized her talent for writing and encouraged her to develop it. Jessica got her start writing concert reviews for Miami Music and Lifestyle site Fabrikalink. Upon graduating from high school she followed her dream of being a reporter all the way to completion as a journalism major at Florida International University. From there she worked as a reporter for the Neighbors section of the Miami Herald. An experience she found especially fulfilling, Jessica was able to go out on the streets of Miami and write community news while seeing her name in print for a reputable newspaper. Since then she has launched a successful career as a journalist in the entertainment industry.
En sus años de secundaria Jessica unió su creatividad y amor a contar historias. Ella decidió ser periodista cuando su maestra de Ingles reconoció su talento por la escritura y la animo a desarrollarla. Jessica comenzó escribiendo articulos sobre conciertos locales en el website de Música en Miami: Fabrikalink. Cuando se graduó de secundaria Jessica siguió sus sueños de periodismo, y completo su educación en la Universidad Internacional de la Florida (FIU). De ahí, trabajo para el Miami Herald, una experiencia que encontró gratificante. Jessica salia a las calles de Miami, escribiendo noticias comunitarias, a la misma ves, viendo su nombre en un periódico respetado. Desde ese entonces a tenido mucho éxito en su carrera, trabajando como periodista en la industria de entretenimiento.
She has worked as entertainment editor for the site Voxxi, and is a former Latin Times reporter interviewing the likes of John Leguizamo, Alejandro Sanz, Anne Hathaway, and Carlos Vives. The latter, an experience she describes as “amazing and very spontaneous”. She was able to land the interview with the Colombian vallenato star without the help of her editor, and her charisma and hustle has helped her establish fruitful professional relationships. Jessica currently works as a writer for the popular Latin American web-presence We Are Mitu. Using her knowledge and invaluable experience she launched two projects of her own: Pulso Pop, a latin entertainment blog, and A Lo Nica Con La Roiz, a project that puts a spotlight on Nicaraguan news.
Jessica a sido editora para el website Voxxi, y escribió para Latín Times, entrevistando gente como, Ricky Martin, Alejandro Sanz, Eva Longoria y Carlos Vives. La ultima, una experiencia que ella describe como “increible y espontánea”, Jessica organizo la entrevista con la estrella de vallenato Colombiano sin la ayuda de un editor. Uso su charisma, sonrisa, y se lanzo cuando vio una grande oportunidad que hasta este día le abrió muchas puertas profesionales. Jessica ahora escribe artículos para la presencia Latino-Americana en el web, “We Are Mitu”. Usando su experiencia y sabiduría, Jessica lanzo dos proyectos propios: Pulso Pop un blog de entretenimiento latino, y A Lo Nica Con La Roiz un proyecto que destaca noticias Nicaragüenses.
In our Nicas in Miami post I spoke about my personal experience growing up in Dade County with Nicaraguan parents, and how networking within our communities is essential. Jessica is proof that your dreams only end when you stop chasing them. Her accomplishments have not gone unrecognized in the Nica-American community of Miami-Dade County. In 2014 she received the award of Mejor Periodista Nicaragüense Revelación del Año. She has rubbed elbows with the elite of Nicaraguan entertainment: Luis Enrique, Carlos Mejia Godoy, and the Menudo of Nicaragua Los Mokuanes. Her dedication to A Lo Nica Con La Roiz shows her devotion to making Nicaragua as important a part of the conversation as any other Latin country with more media representation. A Lo Nica boasts over 11,000 devoted followers on Facebook and to boot? She’s done all of this before her 30th birthday, which happens to be tomorrow, September 16th.
En nuestro blog “Nicas en Miami” hable sobre mi experiencia personal creciendo en Dade County con padres Nicaragüenses, y como colaborar dentro de nuestras comunidades es esencial. Jessica es prueba de que los sueños solo terminan cuando uno se canza de seguirlos, y su trabajo a sido reconozido en el condado de Miami-Dade. En 2014 Jessica recibió el premio de Mejor Periodista Nicaragüense Revelación del Año. Entrevistando y “hangeando” con Nicaragüenses como: Luís Enrique, Carlos Mejia Godoy, y el Menudo de Nicaragua, Los Mokuanes. Su dedicación a “A Lo Nica Con La Roiz” enseña su devoción en hacer Nicaragua parte de le conversación, igual a otros paisez Latino-Americanos que tienen mas representación en los medios de comunicación. A Lo Nica tiene mas de 11,000 seguidores en Facebook, y todo esto? Lo pudo lograr antes de cumplir sus 30 primaveras, que por cierto las cumple un dia despues de la Independencia Nica, Septiembre 16.
As children of immigrants, many of us know the aspirations our parents had for us when leaving their native countries for “the land of opportunity“. One of the things I admire most about Jessica is that she has lived up to this dream without forgetting her roots. You’d be hard-pressed to find an interview where La Leonesa doesn’t shout-out Nicaragua. We want to thank Jessica for supporting MyXXFLY and wish her continued success in journalism. I am certain that she will be a champion of Nicaraguan-American representation in the news and entertainment industry for many years to come.
Como hijos de inmigrantes, nosotros sabemos las aspiraciones que nuestros padres tenían para nosotros cuando se fueron de sus tierras natales para venir a la “tierra de la oportunidad”. Una de las cosas que mas admiro de Jessica es que a realizado este sueño sin olvidar sus raíces. En cada entrevista, La Leonesa se asegura de mencionar a su Nicaragua. Le deseamos mucho éxito en su carrera y estoy segura que Jessica seguirá representando a Nica-Americanos en la noticia y industria de entretenimiento por muchos años mas.
